Listing rotations without hours or patient details
Do not just write 'medical-surgical rotation.' Include the facility, unit size, patient ratio, total hours, and specific skills practiced. This is your clinical experience.
Not listing NCLEX pass or license details
Your RN license state and number must be visible. If you are waiting for results, write 'NCLEX-RN completed [date], license pending.'
Skipping ACLS for acute care applications
Most hospital med-surg, telemetry, and ICU positions prefer or require ACLS. Get it before you apply. It costs about $200 and takes one to two days.
Using a two-page resume as a new grad
One page is the standard for new graduates. You do not have enough experience to justify two pages. Be concise and prioritize your strongest rotations.
Not mentioning CNA or PCT experience
If you worked as a CNA or PCT during nursing school, this is a major advantage. It shows bedside experience beyond clinical rotations. List it prominently.
What to do if you have no professional experience
As a new graduate nurse, your clinical rotations ARE your experience. Here is how to present them effectively:
Break down rotations by specialty
List each rotation with the facility, unit, hours, and patient ratio. Your senior practicum deserves its own detailed entry with 3 to 4 bullet points.
Get BLS, ACLS, and PALS before applying
BLS and ACLS are minimum requirements for most hospital positions. PALS is needed for pediatric and emergency department roles. Having all three ready saves weeks in the hiring process.
Highlight CNA or volunteer experience
Any patient care experience outside of clinical rotations strengthens your resume. Include CNA work, hospital volunteering, or medical mission trips.
Apply to nurse residency programs
HCA, Ascension, Kaiser, Mayo Clinic, and Cleveland Clinic all run structured residency programs for new graduates. These programs expect zero experience beyond nursing school.
