Indeed resume import, the details

Indeed Resume Import: Every Step, and Which File to Apply With

This is the detail page behind the short Indeed resume import guide. It walks through the download from Indeed, the import, the template step, and the difference between an Indeed Resume and an uploaded file.

Free account for downloads. No credit card. No watermark.

Quick answer

  1. 1. On Indeed, open your profile, go to the Resume tab, click the three dots on your resume, and choose Download. You get a PDF.
  2. 2. Go to smoothapply.com/resume-builder/?start=import and upload that PDF. Your contact details, experience, education and skills land in the editor.
  3. 3. Pick a template, tidy the wording, and download PDF or DOCX. Free account, no watermark, no card.
Step 1

Download your resume from Indeed

Indeed keeps two kinds of resume on your account. The Indeed Resume is generated from your profile and always uses the same fixed layout. An uploaded resume is a file you added yourself. Both sit in the Resume tab of your profile, and both can be downloaded the same way, as of September 2026, per Indeed's help article Resume options menu: managing a resume.

If you only see an Indeed Resume and not the file you remember uploading, Indeed may have replaced it when you edited your profile. The FAQ on creating, uploading and managing a resume file explains how the two coexist, as of September 2026.

Step 2

Import the PDF into SmoothApply

Open smoothapply.com/resume-builder/?start=import and upload the PDF you just downloaded. You do not need an account to start editing. The importer reads the file and fills the editor with your name, contact line, work history, education and skills.

Indeed's PDF is plain and predictable, which is good news for import: the sections are labeled, dates sit next to job titles, and there are no columns to confuse a parser. Still, spend a minute checking the result before you move on.

Step 3

Make it look like a real resume

The Indeed Resume has one layout for everyone. That is fine for Indeed's quick apply flow, but when a hiring manager opens a PDF attachment, a plain generic document does you no favors. In the builder you can choose from 93 templates, switch between one column, two column and mixed layouts, and set fonts, colors and spacing. All templates are free.

Keep it simple. Indeed's own help center recommends avoiding heavy graphics and text boxes because some applicant tracking systems struggle to read them, as of September 2026 (indeed.com/help). A clean single column template with clear headings is the safe default. If you like, run the finished file through the free ATS checker, an 11 point scan that needs no account.

Step 4

Download as PDF or Word, free

When it reads well, download it. PDF is the right format for attachments and for uploading back to Indeed. DOCX is for employers who ask for Word, or when you want to make small edits later without opening the builder. TXT is there for application forms that ask you to paste your resume into a box.

Downloads need a free account so the resume can be saved to your profile, and that is all. There is no watermark, no credit card, and no download limit. The only paid feature on SmoothApply is unlimited AI writing; everything about building, styling and exporting is free.

Once you have the new PDF, go back to Indeed, open the Resume tab, and upload it as your own file. You can keep the Indeed Resume for one click applications and attach the designed PDF whenever an employer accepts a file.

More questions

What is the difference between an Indeed Resume and an uploaded resume?
An Indeed Resume is the document Indeed builds from the work history, education and skills in your profile, and it has one fixed layout you cannot restyle. An uploaded resume is your own file, kept as you made it. Indeed's FAQ explains that you can edit the content of the profile resume but not its design, as of September 2026 (indeed.com/help).
Should I use the Indeed Resume or attach my own file when applying?
When an employer accepts uploads, a file you designed usually reads better than the fixed Indeed layout, and you can keep both: the Indeed Resume for quick apply and your own PDF for everything else. Indeed's own guidance is to keep layouts simple because some systems struggle with graphics and text boxes, as of September 2026 (indeed.com/help), so choose a clean single column or simple two column template.
