Free resume builder, the details

Why Resume Builders Ask for a Credit Card, and What Is Free Without One

This is the detail page behind the free resume builder with no credit card. It spells out what no card means on the free plan, whether you need an account, why other builders ask for a card at the download step, and what you can download.

Free account for downloads. No credit card. No watermark.

What no credit card means on this page

Plenty of builders say free and mean free to type. This page uses a narrower definition. On SmoothApply the free plan costs $0 for as long as you use it, it never asks for card details, it has no expiry date, and nothing on it converts into a subscription.

There is exactly one paid product: a Monthly plan that adds unlimited AI writing, tailoring and job match analysis. It costs $2.95 for a 14-day trial, then $19.95 per month, and it auto-renews until you cancel. You reach it only by clicking the upgrade yourself. If you never click it, you never see a payment form.

What needs an account and what does not

An account is not the same as a card. SmoothApply has three levels of access; only the third costs money, and only the second asks for anything, which is an email address.

Without an account

  • Open the builder and write your resume
  • Pick from all 93 templates and change fonts, colors, spacing and layout
  • Start from a template or an occupation example
  • Run the ATS checker
  • Export as TXT

Your work stays in your browser until you sign in.

With a free account

  • Download PDF and DOCX, unlimited, no watermark
  • Save up to 20 resumes to the cloud and open them from any device
  • Create a shareable read-only resume link
  • Use the cover letter builder and the job tracker
  • Spend your 25 AI credits

Signup asks for an email address. There is no card field.

With the Monthly plan

  • Unlimited AI writing, tailoring and job match analysis
  • Nothing else changes

The only place a card is ever requested, and you go there yourself.

Why so many resume builders ask for a card

The usual pattern is trial-to-subscription. The builder itself is free, the free download is plain text, and the PDF is the moment a card is required. The trial costs a dollar or two, then converts into a recurring charge unless you cancel in time. Three current examples:

Notice "every 4 weeks." A 4-week cycle comes around 13 times in a 52-week year, not 12, so it is one more charge than a calendar-month plan at the same price. Already inside one of these subscriptions? The cancellation steps are in our guides for Zety, Resume.io and LiveCareer.

Not every builder collects a card, but no card does not always mean a clean file. As of September 2026, Kickresume's free plan needs no card and allows unlimited PDF downloads without a watermark on 4 basic templates (kickresume.com), while Enhancv's free plan is "valid for 7 days" and puts "Enhancv branding" on the resume (enhancv.com/pricing).

More questions

Why do free resume builders charge you at the download step?
Most of them run a trial-to-subscription model. The builder is free to use, the free download is plain text only, and the PDF or Word file is the moment they ask for a card. The trial is cheap and converts into a recurring charge, in several cases billed every 4 weeks rather than once a month. SmoothApply does not lock downloads behind payment, so there is no step at which you are asked for a card to get your file.
What happens when I run out of free AI credits?
Nothing changes for building or downloading. Free accounts get 25 AI credits for actions such as enhance, proofread, condense, tailor to job and job match analysis. Once they are used, further AI actions need the Monthly plan, but your templates, design tools, cloud saves and PDF, DOCX and TXT downloads keep working.
